Penmetsa Ram Gopal Varma (born April 7, 1962) is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer best known for his work in Telugu and Hindi films, as well as television. Varma directed films in a variety of genres, including parallel cinema and docudrama, which were noted for their gritty realism, technical skill, and craft. Varma is regarded as one of the forefathers of new age Indian cinema, having won the National Film Award for his script for the political crime drama Shool. He appeared in the BBC World series Bollywood Bosses in 2004. Grady Hendrix of Film Comment, published by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in 2006, referred to Varma as "Bombay's Most Successful Maverick" for his experimental film work.
