Carl Friedrich Benz, also known as Karl Friedrich Benz, was a German engine designer and automotive engineer who lived from 25 November 1844 to 4 April 1929. His 1885 Benz Patent Motorcar is regarded as the first practical automobile and the first car to be mass-produced. In 1886, he received a patent for the motorcar. Benz & Cie., based in Mannheim, was the world's largest automobile plant at the time. It merged with Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz, which manufactures the Mercedes-Benz and other brands. Benz is widely regarded as the "Father of the Automobile" and the "Father of the Automobile Industry." Karl Benz died on April 4, 1929, at the age of 84, in his house in Ladenburg, of a bronchial inflammation. Bertha Benz remained at their last house until her death on May 5, 1944. The family stayed in the house for another thirty years.
