Indian jails running out of space, UP prisons most crowded with 165% occupancy

According to a report compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in 2017, Indian jails are running out of space with prisoners being stuffed in over-occupied cells. The report says that the occupancy rate in the jails is at a 5-year high from 2012 to 2017. The national occupancy rate in Indian prisons is 115.1% while Uttar Pradesh has the most crowded prisons with 165% occupancy, followed by Chattisgarh with 157.2%.
