University of California researchers have discovered giant viruses with features only seen in cellular life including human-like immune systems. It’s an entirely new group of giant phages (viruses infecting bacteria) with 351 gene sequences. Scientists found genes that code for unexpected things, including cellular machinery that reads and executes DNA instructions to build proteins, particularly ribosomal proteins.
