On Sunday, the sun produced its most intense solar outburst in more than three years. The brilliant explosion of the M4.4 flare was followed by a coronal mass ejection, which is common with solar flares. This flare launched a whole new solar cycle (solar cycle 25), which began in December 2019 and was announced in September; experts predict that it will be rather calm, similar to solar cycle 24 before it.
