Gravitational waves were discovered for the first time on Earth on September 14, 2015. These ripples in spacetime, predicted by Einstein in 1916, were caused by the merging of two black holes in a faraway galaxy. In a nutshell, the power emitted was 50 times that of all the stars in the Universe combined. However, this was not the only amazing component of the event. Each of the black holes had a mass of about 30 solar masses.
