The Australian Police have issued a warning, alerting the Chinese students and officials of a sudden rise in “virtual kidnapping” scams. The practice involves foreign students faking their own abduction to trick families overseas into paying ransoms. According to the Australian police, eight incidents of virtual kidnapping, involving a total payout of A$3.2 million ($2.3 million), were reported this year.
