El Salvador imposed a 24-hour lockdown of prisons containing gang members, and President Bukele has cautioned their leaders will be sent into solitary confinement following a sudden rise in homicides. Bukele has insisted “maximum emergency” lockdown will be enforced while police are investigating 22 homicides reported on Friday. This number is the highest total in a single day since Bukele came into power last June.
