Hindi, one of the most spoken languages in India, holds great importance in the heart of every Indian. And to acknowledge the importance of the Hindi language and pay the respect of gratitude, Hindi Diwas is celebrated every year on September 14. Hindi Diwas is an attempt to spread awareness about the language Hindi and promote Hindi as India's mother tongue. Moreover, Hindi Diwas is observed to commemorate the event when Hindi was adopted as the official language of India.
Hindi Diwas marks the importance and memorizes September 14, 1949, when Hindi was adopted as the official language by the Constituent Assembly. Hindi is one of the two official languages of the Central Government. Hindi is the language of most of the people living in India. Hindi is the fourth most spoken language globally, just after English, Spanish, and Mandarin. Hence, Hindi Diwas is celebrated as any other festival celebrated in India.
HISTORY OF THE LANGUAGE HINDI
To celebrate the Hindi Diwas and pay respect to the Hindi language, it is important to learn about the history of the Hindi language. The history of the Hindi language dates back to the Indo-Aryan division of the Indo-European family. Persian and Mughals added their unique touch to the language Hindi. India is a diverse country, and hence there were hundreds of languages spoken throughout the country before independence. And the major question that arose after independence was about the language. And Hindi, then in the year 1947, was declared as the official language. Though, aside from India, the Hindi language is spoken by Nepal, Fiji, Guyana, Tobago, Trinidad, Suriname, and Mauritius.
WHY IS HINDI DIWAS CELEBRATED ON 14TH SEPTEMBER?
Once India got independence in 1947, the government of India set a goal to give an idealized look to the country's mother tongue. They also decided to target grammar and orthography using the Devnagri script to bring about standardization in writing. Then on September 14 in 1949, the Constituent Assembly decided to make Hindi the official language of India. And to promote Hindi as the mother tongue and propagate this language worldwide from the year 1953, on September 14 was declared as Hindi Diwas for every coming year. Besides this, September 14 is the birthday of Rajendra Singh, who made great efforts to make Hindi the official language of India.
SIGNIFICANCE OF HINDI DIWAS
Hindi Diwas has a great significance. The announcement of Hindi as the official language was in itself a great step. And to acknowledge Hindi Diwas every year was a great attempt of the government of India as it was an attempt to bring people together. Hindi Diwas is a way of bringing together the myriad linguistic, religious, and cultural groups residing in India's vast country. And there was a great need for a unique national flavor after independence to integrate perfection, and Hindi Diwas emerged as that flavor of nationalism. And an official language was the need of an hour that time; hence Hindi filled that need the best as Hindi was the most spoken language in most parts of Northern India.
THEME FOR THE HINDI DIWAS
Every year a theme is decided for the celebration of Hindi Diwas. For the year 2021, the theme is 'New World, New India, New Hindi.' The theme has been decided by Hansraj College and Mahakavi Jaidhankar Prasad Foundation.
FACTS RELATED TO HINDI DIWAS AND HINDI LANGUAGE
Hindi is the most spoken language in India, as about 78% of the people in India understand and speak Hindi.
The word 'Namaste' in Hindi is the most commonly used in the language.
The first Hindi Literature on the Hindi language history was composed by a French writer, not Indian named, 'Grasim the Taisi.'
One of the most interesting facts about Hindi is that Hindi is a word of Persian language word. Even the first Hindi poem was written by an eminent poet, Amir Khusro.
Hindi is one of the seven languages used to create a web address or URL in India.
Every year from the Hindi Diwas, i.e., September 14 to September 21 i.e., Hindi or Rajsabha week is celebrated for a week. Several events and competitions take place during this week in the institutions and offices. The motive of the celebration of this Hindi week is to develop the spirit among people for the Hindi language. During the whole week, people are told and explained about the development and importance of Hindi through various events.
Hindi was recognized as the official language on January 26, 1950, in Article 343 of the constitution.
On Hindi Diwas, Bhasha Samman is given to the people to inspire others towards Hindi. This prestigious award is given annually to the person who has made his/her special contribution to the upliftment of the Hindi language among the people.
