Trump names Patrick Shanahan as acting US Defence Secretary

Following the resignation of James Mattis over policy differences with Mr Trump on Friday, US President Donald Trump named Jim Mattis's deputy Patrick Shanahan as acting Pentagon chief. Mr Shanahan will take over on 1 January. Reportedly, Mattis said he would leave the job in February, but the president had been considering removing him early. Mattis resigned after Trump decided to withdraw all troops from Syria.
