Spicejet from Kolkata becomes first passenger plane to land in Sikkim

For the 1st time in Indian history, a passenger flight has landed in the landlocked state of Sikkim. Spicejet Q400 took off from Kolkata and landed at Pakyong airport, 32km away from Gangtok. The airport took almost 9 years to build and cost almost 650 crore rupees. Regular flights from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati are expected shortly. Before this, Sikkimese people had to travel 4 hours to Bagdogra airport near Siliguri.
