Human fat cells can be tweaked to work as pacemakers

In a first, the researchers have been able to tweak the human body's fat cells to work in a similar way as the heart's pacemaker does. It can create controlled rhythmic electrical pulses. This can be a useful alternative treatment for heart disorders. It can also bridge the limitations of the current treatments of artificial pacemaker implants. Each year more than one million artificial pacemakers are implanted globally.
