The Amery ice shelf, the 3rd largest in Antarctica, has produced its iceberg in over 50 years and the calved block is called D28. Scientists knew this calving event would happen & there is no cause for alarm yet for this particular ice shelf. D28 is about 210m thick and contains nearly 315 billion tonnes of ice. Nearshore currents and winds will carry D28 westwards, and will likely take several years to break & melt completely.
