What is destroyer of satellites, ASAT is all about?

PM Modi addressed the nation today to announce the successful testing of A-SAT, an anti-satellite missile and that India has become the 4th nation to do so. The project was named 'Mission Shakti.' The use of this satellite is to destroy satellites for the strategic military objectives. The long-range missiles can be locked on to the target to engage and destroy them. Such missiles have never been used during wars.
