Louis Mapou has been elected as a pro-independence president by New Caledonia. He is the first pro-independence president since a 1998 deal with Paris to grant more political power to the French Pacific territory. The territory hopes to secede from France under the 1998 agreement, known as the Noumea Accord. The third and final referendum of the accord is scheduled to take place in December this year.
