German chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union Party was narrowly defeated by the center-left Social Democrats in the general election. Social Democrats are set to lead a government for the first time since 2005, marking an end to 16 years of conservative-led rule under Angela Merkel. However, none of the two groups have been able to get a commanding majority. Social Democrats were leading with over 26% votes.
