Afghan Taliban announce three-day Eid ceasefire

The Taliban have declared a ceasefire with Afghan government that takes effect from May 24 as Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr begins. The decision comes following a rise in attacks by the Islamist group against government troops recently. President Ashraf Ghani has welcomed the move saying his soldiers will respect the truce. The 3-day ceasefire is expected to boost the hopes of a longer-term reduction in violence.
