The car's construction began in 1994. Koenigsegg planned to construct a sports car that could outperform the McLaren F1 at the time, with speeds exceeding the F1's 386 km/h (240 mph) record set in 1997. The CC's design was inspired by the McLaren F1 and the Ferrari F40. The car was originally silver, then black when the new dihedral helix synchro actuation doors were installed, and eventually its current colour.
