Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, also known as Pompey or Pompey the Great, was a leading Roman general and statesman who lived from 29 September 106 BC to 28 September 48 BC. He was instrumental in transforming Rome from a republic to an empire. He was a student of Roman general Sulla as well as Julius Caesar's political ally and later adversary.
