It was originally named the Second Soviet Cosmic Rocket and was nicknamed Lunik 2 in contemporaneous media. It was the first spacecraft to reach the Moon's surface and the first human-made object to communicate with another celestial body.The Luna 8K72 s/n I1-7B rocket launched the spacecraft on September 12, 1959. It took a direct route to the Moon.
