Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin was born on October 7, 1952, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia. He grew up in a shared flat with his family, attending local grammar and high schools and developing an interest in athletics. Putin joined the KGB as an intelligence officer after graduating from Leningrad State University with a law degree in 1975. He retained that role, primarily in East Germany, until 1990, when he retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Vladimir Putin was Russia's president from 2000 until 2008, then he was re-elected in 2012. He was previously Russia's Prime Minister.
