Samuel Adams, an American Founding Father, participated in the Boston Tea Party and signed the Declaration of Independence. When official American political parties were established in the 1790s, Adams became a Democratic-Republican (following Thomas Jefferson). His final political position was as governor of Massachusetts from 1794 to 1797. On October 2, 1803, Adams died in his hometown of Boston.
