Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was known to his many followers as Mahatma, or "the great-souled one," for his peaceful philosophy of passive resistance. Gandhi was imprisoned several times during his quest for non-cooperation and undertook various hunger strikes to protest the injustice of India's poorest classes, among other injustices. He was known for his ascetic lifestyle–he often dressed only in a loincloth and shawl–and devout faith. The man was born on October 2, 1869.
