Alfred Tennyson, a Victorian poet, took over as British Poet Laureate today, succeeding William Wordsworth on November 19, 1850. Leigh Hunt and Elizabeth Barrett Browning were also considered. He served as Nobel Laureate until his death in 1892, the longest tenure of any laureate before or since.
