Indira Gandhi's father, Jawaharlal Nehru, was a leader of India's nationalist movement and the country's first prime minister following independence. In 1889, Nehru was born in Allahabad, India. His father was a well-known lawyer and one of Mahatma Gandhi's key lieutenants. Nehru was taught at home by a succession of English governesses and tutors till the age of 16. Jawaharlal Nehru joined the Indian National Congress and the independence struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi. Pakistan was established in 1947 as a new, autonomous Muslim republic. The British departed, and Nehru became India's first prime minister after independence.
