Napoleon was a member of a party that successfully ousted the French Directory in November 1799, in an incident known as the coup of 18 Brumaire. The Directory was replaced by a three-member Consulate, and 5'7" Napoleon was appointed first consul, elevating him to France's most powerful political figure. At the Battle of Marengo in June 1800, Napoleon's soldiers beat one of France's long-standing adversaries, the Austrians, and drove them out of Italy. Napoleon attempted to restore post-revolutionary France's stability.
