On November 9, 1914, in Vienna, Austria, Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler was born. She was discovered as a youngster by an Austrian cinema director and rose to worldwide prominence in 1933 with her appearance in the sexually charged Czech film Ecstasy. Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress who made her imprint on technology during MGM's "Golden Age." She was involved in the early development of a spread spectrum communication technology. Lamarr was also a scientist, co-inventing an early approach for spread spectrum communications, which is still used in many wireless communications today. Later in life, Lamarr became a hermit and died at her Florida home in 2000.
