Sen was born on November 3, 1933, in West Bengal, India, to a well-respected and prosperous family. Amartya Sen is an Indian economist who won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1998 for his pioneering work in welfare economics. Sen is just the sixth Indian to win this accolade, and he is an expert in developing socioeconomic strategies to mitigate the negative consequences of famines and food shortages. During his infancy, he had a strong interest in Sanskrit, Mathematics, and Physics, and his idols were Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw. Bengali literature, as well as Indian and Greek folklore, captivated Sen.
