The Volkswagen brand's origins began with the "Käfer," a Nazi prestige project that began development work in 1934. The "Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH" was formally created on May 28, 1937. In 1938, the name was changed to "Volkswagenwerk GmbH," and the business established its primary facility in what is now Wolfsburg. The start of war, however, and integration with the arms sector, prohibited mass manufacture of the Volkswagen ("people's car") - instead, military vehicles and other munitions were created employing forced labour.
