Sir Ian Murray McKellen is a well-known British theatrical and film actor. He is most recognised for his appearances as 'Magneto' and 'Gandalf' in the film series 'X-Men' and 'The Lord of the Rings,' respectively. He has worked on a variety of projects, including Shakespearean and current theatre, as well as popular fantasy and science fiction films. He was born on May 25, 1939, in Burnley, Lancashire, England, to civil engineer Denis Murray and Margery Lois. He had an elder sister, Jean, who was five years his senior. He was also knighted for his contributions to the performing arts.
