Balbir Singh Sr is a living hero in Indian hockey and is regarded as one of the finest center-forwards of all time. His craft provided tremendous delight to the country and helped it establish its own identity in the years after independence, as the indisputable lynchpin of the Indian hockey team's second hat-trick of Olympic golds – in 1948, 1952, and 1956. Singh was born to Karam Kaur and Dalip Singh Dosanjh in Punjab. His father was a freedom fighter who was repeatedly imprisoned and so missed much of Singh's early years. Singh died on May 25, 2020, at the age of 96, in Mohali.
