On May 24, 1844, inventor Samuel F.B. Morse sent a message across an experimental wire from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore, asking, "What hath God wrought?" The line, taken from the Bible, Numbers 23:23, and recorded on a paper tape, was offered to Morse by Annie Ellsworth, a friend's little daughter. The experiment's success would forever alter the national communication infrastructure. But Morse was more than simply a telegraph enthusiast.
