Mehbooba Mufti made her political debut in 1996, when she won the assembly elections. She was elected to the lower house of Parliament from Anantnag seat in 2004 after serving two consecutive terms as MLA of Kashmir. She was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Anantnag in 2014, a position she held till she resigned in 2016 to become Chief Minister of Kashmir. With the backing of the BJP, she took her oath and became the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2016. She was in power for two years before resigning due to the loss of the BJP's support and the premature collapse of the coalition government in Kashmir.
