On May 15, 1940, Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the first McDonald's at 1398 North E Street and West 14th Street in San Bernardino, California. The brothers launched the "Speedee Service System" in 1948, expanding on the principles of the modern fast-food restaurant pioneered by their predecessor White Castle more than two decades before. The original McDonald's mascot was "Speedee," a chef hat perched on top of a hamburger.
