Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa OBE, who lived from 28 January 1899 to 15 May 1993, was the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. During the 1947 Indo-Pakistani War, he led Indian forces on the Western Front. In 1949, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. He is one of only two Indian Army officers to hold the Five-star rank of Field Marshal, the other being Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. His distinguished military career spanned nearly three decades. Cariappa, who was born on January 28, 1899, in Madikeri, Kodagu, joined the British Indian Army shortly after World War I ended, and was commissioned as a temporary first lieutenant into the 2/88 Carnatic Infantry.
