Sambhaji Bhonsale, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire and Shivaji's eldest son, was born on May 14, 1657, at Purandar Fort near Pune. Sambhaji was the son of Shivaji Maharaj, the Maratha Empire's first ruler/Chhatrapati, and his first wife Saibai. After Shivaji died in April 1680, some ministers in the Maratha court attempted to crown Sambhaji's half-brother Rajaram as king. Shivaji's second son from his wife Soyarabai was Rajaram. Unlike his father, Sambhaji, however, allowed his soldiers to plunder and loot the conquered territories. Sambhaji, on the other hand, became aware of the plot and quickly took control of the forts at Panhala and Raigad. On July 20, 1680, he was crowned Chhatrapati.
