Booth, who was born on May 10, 1838, in Bel Air, Maryland, excelled as a youth in athletics and extracurricular activities but was a mediocre student. His parents were also English immigrants. Junius, his father, was a prominent British Shakespearean actor, and Mary Ann Holmes, his mother, was Junius' mistress. Booth followed in his father's footsteps and entered the theatre after attending school in Bel Air, Sparks, and Cantonsville, Maryland. The name of John Wilkes Booth will always be associated with the name of the president he killed. As an actor, he was well-versed in the workings of a theatre, but on the night of April 14th, 1865, Booth stepped onto the stage for a different cause.
