Motilal Nehru, an Indian National Congress member and independence leader, was born on May 6, 1861. Motilal Nehru was born in Agra to Delhi Kotwal Gangadhar Nehru and his wife Jeorani. Motilal was raised by his elder brother, who relocated the entire family to Allahabad to practise law. Motilal studied at Allahabad and passed his High Court test in 1883. He then attended Cambridge University, where he studied to become a barrister. He became interested in the liberation movement after joining the INC. In 1918, he broke away from the INC's moderate group and began campaigning for more radical government reforms. To attain this goal, he continued to favour solely constitutional measures.
