Karl Heinrich Marx was a German philosopher, critic of political economy, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist, and socialist revolutionary who was born on May 5, 1818 and died on March 14, 1883. The Communist Manifesto, published in 1848, and the three-volume Das Kapital (1867–1883) are two of his most well-known works. Marx's political and philosophical ideas shaped subsequent intellectual, economic, and political history. His name has been used as an adjective, a noun, and a social theory school. Marx was born in Trier, Germany, and attended the universities of Bonn and Berlin, where he studied law and philosophy. In 1843, he married Jenny von Westphalen, a German theatre critic and political activist. Marx became stateless as a result of his political writings and lived in exile with his wife and children
