Meira Kumar (born 31 March 1945) is a politician and former diplomat from India. She was the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment from 2004 to 2009, the Minister of Water Resources for a brief while in 2009, and the 15th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014. Kumar became became the second woman to be nominated for president of India by a major political party when she received the candidacy of the United Progressive Alliance in 2017. Kumar has already served in the 8th, 11th, 12th, and 14th Lok Sabhas before being elected to the 15th Lok Sabha. Kumar was named as the top opposition parties' joint presidential candidate for the 2017 presidential election.
