The last governing Maharaja of Alwar was Maharaja Sir Tej Singh Prabhakar, who lived from 17 March 1911 until 15 February 2009. Tej Singh supported Hindu nationalism through the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha and hosted the Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha, which he presided over in 1947. He was an outspoken opponent of Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation campaign. He is thought to have sponsored and funded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He selected Dr. N.B. Khare as Prime Minister, who failed to prevent, and some say encouraged, sectarian violence in Alwar, which saw Muslims forcibly converted, pushed out, and in some cases murdered during India's Partition.
