Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee OBE was an Indian military commander who served as the Indian Air Force's first Commander-in-Chief. Several honours were bestowed upon him throughout the course of his three-decade career, which ended with his tragic death in 1960. He has been referred to as the "Father of the Indian Air Force." On March 16, 1939, he acquired command of the No. 1 Squadron, becoming the first Indian commander to command a squadron. Under Mukerjee, the squadron changed to Hawker Hart aircraft in June 1939, with a few Hawker Audax aircraft on hand. He led the squadron into battle in NWFP at Miramshah.
