General Bipin Rawat, the Chief of Defense Staff, was born in Pauri, Uttarakhand. Laxman Singh Rawat, his father, served in the Indian Army and attained to the rank of Lieutenant-General. CDS Bipin Rawat was commissioned into the 5th battalion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles, the same unit as his father Laxman Singh Rawat, on December 16, 1978. He spent ten years performing counter-insurgency operations, rising through the ranks from Major to former CDS.

Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee OBE was an Indian military commander who served as the Indian Air Force's first Commander-in-Chief. Several honours were bestowed upon him throughout the course of his three-decade career, which ended with his tragic death in 1960. He has been referred to as the "Father of the Indian Air Force."
