Sayajirao Gaekwad III, born Shrimant Gopalrao Gaekwad, reigned as Maharaja of Baroda Realm from 1875 to 1939 and is famous for restructuring much of his state throughout his reign. He was a member of the Marathas' royal Gaekwad family, which reigned over parts of modern-day Gujarat. Sayajirao was born as Gopalrao Gaekwad in the Maratha hamlet of Kavlana in the Malegaon taluka of Nashik district, the second son of Kashirao Bhikajirao Dada Sahib Gaekwad (1832–1877) and Ummabai. His branch of the Gaekwad dynasty was a cadet branch descended from the first Raja of Baroda's morganatic marriage and hence was not anticipated to inherit to the throne.
