Michael Phelps is widely regarded as the greatest Olympian of all time. Some may argue that Usain Bolt, Carl Lewis, or Nadia Comaneci have a legitimate claim. But, in terms of total medals won, there is a clear winner: Michael Phelps. Even though Phelps competes in a sport where exceptionally talented athletes may win gold medals over a variety of lengths and strokes, his achievements dwarf those of any other competitor. Phelps was born on June 30, 1985, in Baltimore, and became serious about the sport after joining the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. After his parents split, he was raised by his mother Deborah, along with his sisters Hilary and Whitney. Phelps has 28 medals in total: his 23 gold medals are more than double the amount of his closest competitors, and it's not like other swimmers have amassed ridiculously large numbers of medals.
