Katharine Houghton Hepburn (May 12, 1907 – June 29, 2003) was a film, stage, and television actress from the United States. Hepburn has a 60-year career as a Hollywood leading lady. She was noted for her headstrong independence, energetic nature, and outspokenness, building a cinematic character to match her public image, and playing strong-willed, intelligent women on a frequent basis. Her work spanned a variety of genres, from screwball humour to literary drama, and she was recognised with numerous awards, including four Academy Awards for Best Actress, a record for any performer. The American Film Institute ranked Hepburn the finest female star of classic Hollywood movies in 1999.
