The third World Cup began with two wonderful shocks, when India defeated the West Indies and Zimbabwe defeated Australia in the first round of matches, and finished with the biggest surprise of all, when India defeated the West Indies again, this time in the final at Lord's. None of the eight teams had to settle for a draw. India got £20,000 for their triumph, in addition to the Trophy and silver-gilt medals for each player. On this day in 1983, Kapil Dev and his India team created history by becoming the first to win the ICC Cricket World Cup. Lord's hosted India's biggest cricketing success at the time, when they defeated two-time champions West Indies by 43 runs to claim the prized trophy.
