June 23

The IOC was established on June 23, 1894, at the Sorbonne University in Paris, at the inaugural Olympic Congress, which was organised by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Since then, the IOC and the Olympic movement have grown. The original Olympic Charter reflected de Coubertin's utopian view of athletics' place in the world at large, and those emotions remain unchanged in the present Charter text. Throughout contemporary Olympic history, the IOC has been at the heart of various political issues. Given the Olympics' dominance in sports, it is not surprise that they have been utilised to push political goals.
