Ramakant Desai, who was born on June 20, 1939, was well-known for his fast bowling. He was dubbed "little" because he was small in stature but had a large heart. In reality, Desai's ability to wring anything from dead decks in India was commendable. Desai overcame his 5 feet 4 inch size as a medium pacer to produce balls fast enough to be the Indian spearhead for the most of the 1960s. He could be quite a handful in favourable conditions, as he demonstrated at Lord's in 1959. Regrettably, he rarely had the opportunity to bowl on grassy wickets with moisture in the air.
