Graham Gooch led the way with 114, while Derek Pringle added a half-century. Chetan Sharma was the highlight of the Indian bowlers, taking five wickets. Dilip Vengsarkar's unbroken century propelled India to 341 in their first innings, giving them a 47-run innings advantage. For the hosts, Graham Dilley took four wickets. England struggled in the second innings, being bowled out for 180, with Kapil Dev dismissing four batters.
